Abishag Shaw, Livia Levesque

I deeply enjoy Shaw and his aw-shucks schtick and his deadly competence and his understated but deep loyalty to Ben and his family, and how carefully and mindfully and wholeheartedly he's ready to step over the racial divide between them. He's an unutterably lonely character, without roots or family of community of his own, and while he can't quite join Ben's, it's pretty obvious that they're one of the main sources of light in his life. Also he hurts very prettily and I love it for him.

And on the other side there's Livia, a deeply horrible woman who also was so deeply horribly done by you can't help but see where she's coming from - and I imagine she's lonely, too, after a lifetime of one selfish choice after another, all taken in the search of that elusive safety... She keeps shoring her walls up, and I think she nevertheless knows very well that's she might be building on the time. She fascinates me! And one got to admit, if you don't have to, like, deal with her, mama Levesque just slaps as a character, and her wit and her memory are sharp and awesome.

So. Those two probably won't be caught dead in one room together in a normal situation... but there's got to be something that will get them working as a team - most likely really bad danger to Ben, or maybe a mystery so tasty to Livia that she can't pass up the chance to get into it. (Ben can be an entirely offscreen character if needed, or play a vital part). Or something else! They're going to be the worst team ever, but also they're going to be an absolutely terrifying unstoppable force if they work in tandem. Yes please.

Winter's Orbit - Everina Maxwell

Kiem Tegnar

Look, I just really like Kiem. He reminds me of Freddy from Heyer's Cotillion - not necessarily the smartest person in any room, but his EQ is par excellence and his kindness is all the charts. I love that he's kind despite pretty much nothing in his upbringing or surroundings wants him to be kind, I love that he's Determined and Brave and Decent without getting on a high horse about it, I love that he's so invested into treating people around him like people, and that it never occurs to him to use or abuse. I love that he's been exiled to a monastery, and that he's a world-class meditator! And I sense that underneath all that healthy altruism his self-esteem issues run as deep and as complicated as Jainan's are, if maybe in a different direction.

So! Give me post-canon Kiem please, give me him finding his legs, or Jainan learning more about him as their marriage grows, or Jainan and Bel teaming up for some Kiem-centric issue. Or just some good old whump. Or Kiem dealing with his job or his charities or with politics, and slowly learning to be consciously unstoppable about it. Give him a chance to discover himself competent and complicated, and let me revel in it.

The Foundling - Georgette Heyer

Gideon Ware, Adolphus "Gilly" Ware

Your honor, those guys are in love! I love that Foundling is essentially a bildungsroman instead of a standard romance, and I love that Gilly goes on to have his big adventure, and Gideon has the faith in him to let him handle it - up to a point where Gilly does need his help, and then he drops everything and rushes to his rescue. I love the undercurrent of tension relating to titles/inheritance issues, and how Gideon's own father shortly suspects him of killing Gilly for the title... and how much it makes Gideon angry. I love how Gideon is slow and methodical and Gilly is kind and bright and yet surprisingly competent, and I imagine they share a pretty wicked sense of humor between them.

So... give me more! Post-canon, getting together, figuring it out, more Shenanigans, mutual rescues; fantasy AU (Gilly as a prince in trouble and Gideon as his heir apparent? fleeing from the coup? hm); all kinds of AUs, actually, i think it's interesting how this tension might play out in a different setting. Or, yes, some good fashioned whump. For one of them or for both of them! Let Gilly see how much Gideon cares, let Gideon has a front row seats to how unhinged Gilly can be when he's putting his back into it. Let them have some high-stakes fun.

Kim Suho | Lloyd Frontera, Javier Asrahan, Alicia Magentano

Okay, so I adore how off the wall insane Kim Suho is, and yet how competent, and how both Javier and Alicia are so so so into it, at this point without reserve or holding back - all the while being open to how ridiculous his antics are. I love the complete lack of hinges in this trio, on all sides, and I love the tension between all that devotion and excitement flying in all directions... All the while Kim Suho keeps laughably underestimating how important he is to both Javier and Alicia, how much they're willing to do for him, and how much they love him. He's still stuck in his self-image of an impostor, and I think he's on some level pretty sure his value is solely in his use, for all his bluster and self-aggrandizement, and that's like catnip to me.

So! I'm caught up to the current state of canon and while canon-wise it's interesting, I just want like... see Alicia put a ring on it, and of course get Javier on board, and then see how poor Kim Suho manages to be a king-consort and how much insanity it will wrought and whether or not Alicia and Javier combined can hammer into his head that no, he IS loved and appreciated and seen. Even when he's not trying to work himself to death trying to fix yet another Situation (on a more serious note, I'm super intrigued by the idea of him laid low and unable to do shit - we know from canon that he self-isolates when depressive, and self-isolates in general, but what if they won't let him?).

Anyway. Yes. Whump is a plus, construction nerdery is a plus, administrivia is a plus, Alicia imparting some of the relationship wisdom with a healthy dose of BDSM is beyond a plus.

The Rising World Series - Martha Wells

Bashasa Calis, Kaiisteron

This pairing (romantic or platonic) essentially contains everything I love in a nice fictional relationship in a single package: overcompetence, utter devotion, mutual protectiveness and care, Kai imprinting on Bashasa for that first real spark of hope and then just never ever letting go, Bashasa taking constant and personal care of Kai - both his well-being and his dignity (I think the moment when Kai went from 'oh cool' to 'oh no I'm done for' was when he realized Bashasa made sure to take Enna's body from the Summer Halls.)

And on the other hand there's this undercurrent of tension with Bashasa's alcoholic coping strategies, and constant inability to truly protect each other - either from the war they're waging or from the complexities of establishing the peace afterward; and, of course, Kai having to see Bashasa grow old and die...

Anyway yes. Canon is tantalizing but there's just not enough of those two! Gimme skirmishes, gimme politicking and cultural shock, gimme epistolary bewilderment and outside POV of their contemporaries, gimme mutual hurt/comfort, gimme on-the-run-together, give me them giving some bodily, worshipful care to each other, just really dig into it. Raising Bashat together, doing the whole immortal-mortal family thing, teaching each other. Any other character is welcome in the mix (aside from Zeide and Tehren I'm tickled pink by Kai's cadre and the sheer concept of it, I love them, give me them). I'm done with both books, so post-canon, mid-canon, sideways from the canon, all is good for me. Divergence or fusion AUs are fun too (they would do really well in a nice old-school slavefic or an arranged marriage fic, you know?)

I'm open to treats and love them!

Here are some general likes and dislikes, and an attempt to give a handful of prompts for each fandom. Those are intended to be very loose inspiration - mix and match at will, or discard if you have a different idea that you think will fit better! I like both gen and shipfic, and unless otherwise specified, I'm usually find with pretty much every pairing under the sun, so if you're feeling any of them, include them at will.

I particularly like:
- Hurt/comfort of all kinds! I love it absolutely in my opinion a solid dose of hurt/comfort can improve just about any story. (I'm particular about who is hurt, though.) I like h/c in context of relationship (friendship, romance, fealty, family etc.), with my fave getting hurt and other people rescuing/comforting/witnessing/consoling/helping them. I love iron woobies, but I also love stoic or imperturbable characters being driven to their limit. As for specific subgenres, just about everything (with a slight preference for physical h/c), from imprisonment to whipping to crucifixion to passing out from exhaustion to starvation to torture to isolation to people learning to be loved and to lean on their close ones.
- Loyalty and fealty, from informal to formal (vassal and liege, kings/queens and their knights, nobles and their retainers, etc), with all its trappings from 'I will die for you' to kneeling and ring kissing and whatnot.
- Rebuilding things and communities! People coming together to slowly and painstakingly either create or recreate order and peace out of chaos. Think Pratchett's city books or Mysterious Island or Frostpunk or various building sims.
- Hope and kindness despite adversity.
- Self-sacrifice (metaphorical and quite literal) and martyrdom (ditto).
- Pining (requited or unrequited but actually requited).
- Tropey AUs - space opera! high fantasy! historical! pirates! nomads traveling on winged cat steeds!
- Outsider POVs.

DNWs
- Permanent character death ('they came back' and 'presumed dead' are fine, mentioning canonical character death is fine).
- Unhappy or hopeless endings.
- Partner betrayal of any kind or infidelity.

Psmith - P. G. Wodehouse

Rupert Psmith, Mike Jackson

Canon-specific DNW: it can be Psmith/Mike or Psmith&Mike, but please no mention of Psmith or Mike being in a committed heterosexual relationship.

My darling Psmith, so unabashedly weird and so adored by the narrative, and his loyal and kind and steadfast Mike, the man of few words and a well-polished cricket bat, a team made in heaven. I love them, I love that Psmith is an unstoppable force, I love that Mike loves and on some level understand Psmith in his entirety and doesn't want him to change, I love that Psmith is fiercely loyal to Mike and will easily and heroically protect him, I love that Psmith's socialism might be mostly an affectation but his willingness to stick his neck out for people isn't, I love their relationship in whatever form it takes, and I want them to get into all the shenanigans, of all kind. For example:

Psmith's latest adventure plunges him into actual physical danger (think Psmith, Journalist, minus racism, plus more mafia), and Mike is to the rescue.
Psmith gets not just amused-invested into something but actually, painfully, horribly invested into some crusade, and Mike is there to help him make it happen and/or deal with the fallout.
Psmith, Pining Nobly. Mike, Pining Nobly. Both, either, at once, in turn...
Psmith falls on hard times after his father dies, will not admit to it or will cheerfully suffer the exhaustion/hunger/whatever, until Mike finds out and sees red.
Psmith and Mike, a travelogue to the location of your choice.
Pslavefic: Psmith, the languid but secretly revolutionary owner, turning the world around for the sake of his newly acquired slave? Psmith and Mike, sold to a cruel master together, surviving? Mike, a good-hearted but uninformed prince, finding himself in possession of one Psmith, a slave suave, imperturbable yet undeniably traumatized? All of the above, but They Were Friends Before? Indenture? Fantasy? Go wild.
Fusions, crossovers, and AUs with whatever fandom I've ever dabbled in: the less probable setting Psmith and Mike can wreck chaos on, the more I want it.

RimWorld (Video Game)

Canon-specific DNW: cannibalism, sexual slavery or exploitation, mind control (RimWorld is a dangerous place overall and this is more than fine, but I would rather not read about those particular threats).

This game does something to my brain that's probably illegal, in a sense that I played it nonstop for about two years, and will play it nonstop again once I re-fiddle with my thousand mods and run it again. When my little hapless pawns land on this giant, unfamiliar, dangerous, scary world and slowly build their tiny world there, something in me goes brrrrrr. So yeah, my broad prompt is: a colony, coming together amidst all this adversity, ideally while clinging tightly to whatever kindness is available on the Rim. A sole desperate survivor taking in a stranger with paralytic abasia and sharing their dwindling resources, people desperately making it work on the polar ice, going from a tiny village to a thriving megapolis, making connections with other settlements, surviving the skirmishes, searching for the star maps, all that jazz. Queer characters - queer women - are a plus. Pet cats are a plus. Radioactive rain that they have to sit out while their crops are dying outside are a plus. Hail Marys are a plus.

(I'm not super invested in the lore and play on Medieval modset half the time anyway, so don't sweet the details much. You can even let them eat not at the tables and not go berserk immediately, oh no.)

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)

Oh, this movie! I'm still crestfallen that we're not going to get a sequel, because it was some perfect intersection of Ritchie's Ritchiness, Arthuriana-adjacent feelings and Shenanigans. And I especially adored Hunnam's Arthur, with his combination of cockiness, competence, humor and vulnerability, his relationship with other characters and his unorthodox approach to management.

I would love to see an exploration of how Arthur deals with his happy endling. Ruling a whole country - and trying to rule it well - is mightily different from running slightly benign mafia, so how is it going to make it work? In the aftermath of Vortigern's rule, with all the neighbors looking over their borders, with the mages just starting to go out of hiding if there are any left but the Mage, with people to feed and wounds to mend and coffers to fill and laws to pass and the knights to keep busy. How would he do it? How many ways would he fail and succeed and fail and succeed again, and how many assassination attempts and harebrained but dangerous scenes will be there on the way?

(Feel free to include any other character and have Arthur be in whatever relationship that you'd like, I'm here for that.)

Chalion Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold

Lupe dy Cazaril

I'm starting to feel that this year is going to have a theme! So yeah, Lupe dy Cazaril, the retainer turned saint turned courtier, who, having survived all of his trials and tribulations, can now turn to his heart's true passion: building Chalion's roads! Or other things, like sea access, sea ports, diplomatic relationships with other countries, drafting better laws and promises, dealing with inheritance crises, maintaining the balance between various governmental branches, and doing other wonderfully interesting things - while managing (or failing to) his obvious PTSD, his raging case of workaholism, his inevitable spate of assassination attempts and so on. Wars! Attempts on Iselle and Bergon he can heroically prevent at any cost! Famines and droughts! Cazaril is where my love for reading administrivia meets my love for reading whump, and the more you lean into one or another or both, the more I'm going to love you.

Any relationship is fine, any supporting characters are fine (I"m especially partial to see him interacting with Ista, former saint to working saint, but it's by no means necessary).

The Goblin Emperor Series - Katherine Addison

Maia Drazhar

Canon-specific DNW: Maia and Csethiro can be in a happy marriage, or a happy friendship-under-the-guise-of-political-marriage, or in a happy lavender marriage, but please don't have either of them be made unhappy or trapped by the other.

Maia my beloved overwhelmed teeth-gritting stoic woobie boy, who entered a political intrigue world and made it work through kindness, steadfastness, dealing with people fairly, sticking to his principles and making everybody care about him: yes! I would love - continuing on the theme - to read about his reign way down the road - ten, twenty years later - when he would come into his own and add some earned gravitas to all those qualities, maybe from an outsider's POV, maybe from the point of view of his closest team of people, maybe through the eyes of somebody just coming into the court... It's fascinating to me to see who he will grow into, essentially, and what he'll help Ethuveraz to grow into. Overwork, exhaustion, dangers, assassinations, cultural clashes and diplomatic visits to other countries are a bonus!

Other possible options: Maia and co on the state visit to Barizhan; Maia if Chenelo survived and was with him when the airship crashed; Maia who grew up at court; Maia who ran away from Edonomee and lived some other life until the empire tracked him down; just Maia's everyday palace life at any point during or post-canon.

Any relationships and any supporting characters are welcome.

I've never done this challenge before, and while I'm hoping to get its spirit correctly, forgive me if something goes wrong. I love those fandoms (I've loved some of them over two decades, hah), I'm incredibly excited about all the opt-in options I picked, and while I'm going to give you some preferences and some likes, at the end of the day I just want the comfort and joy of reading or seeing something done just for me! that hopefully brought you joy to make. I like gen fics, shippy fics, found family fics, you name it. Most of my prompts are written with fic in mind, so if you need to discard or shuffle or remix them or invent something new for any of the medium opt-ins, go for it! Let's have fun.

Hurt/comfort is my bulletproof №1 narrative kink, so when in doubt, go for it. Both physical and emotional, and you can go as wild as you'd like with the physical bits, I love them all. Kidnappings and whippings and dungeons and cages, injuries and martyrdom, chronic pain and exhaustion, debilitating aftermaths of big events, whatever it is, I'm here for it. I love my h/c in context of relationship (be it romantical or platonic or familial), in a sense that the best bit is people close to the focus character rescuing them, being horrified or sympathetic about their pain, avenging them, caring for them, rehabilitating them, and so on. I don't need things to be fully fixed or back to status quo by the end of the story, but loving aftermath and at least some hope in the end are paramount for my emotional payoff.
Found families, tight friendships, us-against-the-world, people finding and keeping each other, providing kindness and warmth against the dark.
Hope and kindness, Clair universes, stories where the entropy tries its hardest but doesn't win.

god, autumn! please be cold, autumn. i'm just about done with this weather.
we've bought a couple of spray painters and started being uncareful at night (spoiler: yes, it's swastika underneath. fckn ultras.)

going to ask psychiatrist №3 on tuesday whether he thinks it's worth tinkering with meds more to resurrect my dead and gone executive function, or if at that point things just Be Like That.
going to sofia on sunday-tuesday to apply for Kot's citizenship, keep your fingers crossed for us. bulgaria has officially prohibited official documents change and transition, which sucks of them, but their chance of fixing it are much more than russia's are, so there's that.

i fall into a proper gaming binge every half a year or so, and then forget that computers games exist altogether. my last bout of addiction was hades, a gorgeous roguelite about trying to get out of the underworld and dealing with family, bigger on the inside than it seemed outside. now i've spent a week headfirst into the beautiful madness of disco elysium, and i'm nowhere close to done. middle of the second playthrough, at least a couple more ahead, maybe three, maybe five - this kind of not closer to be done. finally, almost a decade later, there's a spiritual successor to planescape: torment, perfect, unique and compelling like nothing else. i'm head over heels in love.

(and a note: it's very much a game that can and should be played by non-gamers. it's a true click-and-pointer; the entirety of its action happens through dialogue. give it a try.)

in disco elysium, your character wakes up in an absolutely trashed hotel room, coming off a bender of epic proportions, fucked up beyond recognition, and fully amnesiac. it turns out you're visiting a (very much not) sunny town of revachol, a slowly decaying remnant of revolution and consequent war, and, well. you're a cop, and you're here to investigate a murder. namely, a murder of somebody whose dead body is still hanged in the backyard…

this is a horrendous mess, and you are a horrendous mess - bloated, amnesiac, confused, weird, pathetic, with a host of warring impulses and demands fighting for space in your head - but thankfully there's a pillar of stability and light in your dark world, waiting just downstairs: lieutenant kim katsuragi, your assigned partner from another station, a man with godlike sense of dignity and practically endless amount of quiet patience for your bullshit. together with him, you can investigate a crime, try to stop a small civil war, solve a couple of questions of the universe, and maybe, if you play your cards just once, dance a truly epic dance together in a shot-up church. there are also cryptids, karaoke, board games, collecting bottles for money, a mystery of a crashed police car, discovering your own feelings about the homo-sexual underground, and many, many other things.

(the gameplay: you have four sets of stats (intellect, sensitivity, physicality, interacting with objects) and, depending on how you distribute them, you play a wildly different character every time. there's no way to fail: your detective can be dumb as a bag of rocks but able to get by on intuition and muscle memory, or smart and horrible with people, or empathetic and weak, or - the combinations are endless. the game is conducted via a combination of red stat checks that you can do only once, and white checks that you can try, fail, up your stats and retry again. aside from a handful of cases, a lot of time it's easier - and funnier - to accept failures rather than try for a perfect go every time. you are a hot mess, after all. there are ten game days, a variety of sidequests and tasks, and almost endless variability in how you approach them. everything is connected, except for that one door.)

(there's also a political system, where you eventually pick up your political affiliation: a communist, a libertarian, a fascist, and a wishy-washy uncommitted liberal. the game has a lot of things to tell you about all your choices, most of them funny, some of them horrendous. there's no innocence here, and no way to weasel out of the consequences of your worldview; and you could also see that it was done by eastern europe people.)

and the thing is. the thing is, it's very much the kind of a game where you perform a field autopsy on a three days old corpse while a couple of preteen kids are watching avidly and offering their color commentary, and at some point you have to rummage in the corpse's mouth and feel its brain stem. a lot of very, very bad things happen or happened - to you, to the people around you, to the town around you, to the world around you. where in fallout you rolled into town with your stats jacked high and your blaster in hand, and solved ancient disputes and established peace, here the weight of the history is very, very heavy, and you're very, very small. you can't solve the decades of violence and war and trauma and colonization and poverty with the power of your save-scumming and pithy one liners, alas; but you can solve a murder. you can help a sweet and worried old woman. you can put your cheek to a kid's fuzzy plush toy, when offered. you can tell a person, gently, that their loved one is dead, and lie about how drunk they were when they did that. you can replace a taxidermied bird you broke. you can sit on the swing with your partner, waiting for the low tide, and whistle together - two birds on the wire…

it's the gentlest, kindest, sweetest, most hopeful game i've seen in the last decade. it's a goddamn manifesto to human spirit, and to how only - well, love - holds the world, always falling apart, together. a huge part of it is your relationship with kim, because believe me, whoever you are, most of your playthrough would be dedicated to chasing kim's approval and to winning his trust. but it also sneaks into all the cases, all the dialogues, all the little throwaway details. everybody is human; everybody is awful; everybody is holy, even you. oh, even you.

(there are storylines you can or can not discover. about why harry is such a mess - and it's awful and i loved how it was done, with empathy and grace and no judgement; about the state of the world, a bit of eldritch horror so throwaway and beautiful i would read entire volumes just about that; about the city of locusts; about a small girls' memory of playing in the reeds; about the scar of the revolution. suliram, ram, ram…)

(it's also brilliantly, awfully, absurdly, hysterically funny. Art Cop run alone makes me just about die. every failure is funnier than the other. you can be as weird as you want to - in fact, the game encourages you to be as weird as you want to be - and the world around will react accordingly, outperforming you in sheer absurdity. there's a war-and-peace sized amount of dialogue and description in the game, and it's written by some damn genius of pratchettian caliber.)

and, and and. honestly, the best way to get sucked into this game is not reviews, it's random quotes and screenshots, out -of-context spoilers - it's more or less impossible to resist. but please, oh please, give it a try.

Dearest author, hello! Thank you so much for picking my fandoms, and enjoying the same tags I do; I'm incredibly excited for this challenge, my favorite of the year, and and those canons, and I want everything.

There are so many tags that I've definitely missed something interesting! I'll try to give some prompts for every fandom, some riffing off the tags and some not. Feel free to mix, match, disregard and ODAO at will, as long as my DNWs are kept. Bring all the tropes to my yard! I can't wait.

General hurt/comfort preferences: I like my hurt hardcore and physical, and my comfort at least somehow proportional and ending on at least a hopeful note, and I like it in context of any given relationship (i.e. the character getting hurt in sight of / for the sake of / in relation to other characters, and them reacting / rescuing / comforting / rehabilitating them, et cetera, not just the character suffering in the vacuum).

I love reading about the aftermaths of disasters as much as I love reading about disasters itself - the recovery, the backsliding, the acceptance, the assistance. Permanent injuries and consequences yes! Adjusting to the new circumstances yes! New understanding yes! And I especially love all those things in the context of larger-than-life, codependent loyalty (formalized or not), self-sacrifice and self-negation.

In particular, the physical kinks especially dear to my heart: torture, dungeons or cages, and rescue thereof, starvation, exhaustion, hand injuries, whipping, crucifixion, various mobility issues, chronic pain, all variations on accepting injuries for somebody's sake. For the emotional hurt/comfort, all variations on pining (and/or mutual pining!) and characters (mistakenly) thinking that they're either unloved or undeserving of being loved or protected, and being shown they're wrong.

I prefer my woobies competent, BAMF-y and fighting every step of the way, or going into the self-sacrifice determinedly and with their eyes open.

I really love non-mundane AUs (high fantasy, pirates, space opera, et cetera), so go there without hesitation if it's your thing.

heaven official's blessing // tian guan ci fu

the state of the novel, all 4k reader screens and change: finished! it cost me a sleepless night or two, but, honestly, i haven't been really fannishly invested for so long, it was completely worth it; and as i'm seized with the need to write a whole post about it, even more so.

where is it and what is it
it's a chinese webnovel by mxtx, the same author who did untamed; it exists as a webnovel, finished and kindly translated here, the manhwa, the donghua (animated adaptation) happening right now, and there's a live action adaptation in plans, directed by the same guy who did untamed. the donghua is gorgeous, the live action i'm unsure about but prepared to be hopeful, the manhwa seems to be very pretty.

but all the adaptations only cover the very beginning of the novel for now, so i went ahead and read the novel, and i have no regrets. it helps that the translation is very good - not without awkward translatorese, but it has consistent and engaging flow and style, and it's also pretty good at conveying mxtx's humor without awkwardness. it reads pretty well.

what's it about?
the world is split into two parts: mortals and various ghosts and demons and entities share the land, while 'heaven officials', aka gods, live in the heavenly kingdom in the sky. pretty much anybody can become a god if they do something really heroic or memorable and/or cultivate (meditation, training, virtuous behavior) really hard. when above, the gods rule their domains and fulfill their believers' wishes; they work sort of like pratchettian gods, dependent on their followers' beliefs and getting influenced by them. heavens are strictly hierarchical, with their own economy and pecking order, and the gods aren't particularly sinless or benevolent; mostly it's a question of scale.

our hero, xie lian, is a prince of a prosperous kingdom who's been on a fast track to ascension for most of his very short life; he's talented, he's virtuous, he's kind, he's strong, and his only peculiar flaw is (somehow naive, but well-meaning) obsession with equality and value of human lives and so on. he becomes a god, unexpectedly, at seventeen, after slaying one especially dangerous ghost, and rises in heaven at the peak of his faith, influence and happiness.

…and then he finds out about drought and incipient trouble in his own kingdom, and, being a young and righteous god too close to his mortality, eschews heavens and returns to save everybody. it, to put it lightly, does not go well. at all. in fact, it goes catastrophically wrong, and, having lost everything, xie lian ascends again, only to get into a fight with the heavenly emperor, and get banished again, this time for good. he roams the mortal lands for next eight hundred of very lonely, luckless and hard years, technically immortal but not invincible, with his powers and his luck stripped away, and learns to make do, eking out a living as a scrap collector. his temples are desecrated, his name is forgotten, his kingdom is long gone, and - well. so it goes.

so it goes! until one day, to everybody's great surprise, he ascends once again: a humble, gentle, immune to shame, unflappable man, an embarrassment to heavens, a 'laughingstock of three realms' who just wants to be left well enough alone. he's Tired.

instead of rest, he gets sent to investigate a dangerous ghost stealing brides who pass through its mountain, and there, during the course of the interrogation, has his first (he thinks) meeting with a terrifying, old-powerful and vengeful ghost king named hua cheng, who likes to terrorize heavens from time to time. but said ghost king seems to be very benevolent and very interested in helping xie lian, and xie lian is pretty instantly smitten… without knowing what's the cause of such interest.

…and meanwhile, in the beginning, there was an unlucky boy, born under the worst stars, whom xie lian saved from falling to his death once, while still mortal, and promptly lost track of. a lot of things happened to this boy, who wanted to be the most devoted worshipper of xie lian the god of the sword and the flower. as one does, you know.

that's the beginning! from there on: investigations, heavenly secrets, old friends and enemies and acquaintances, thematic parallels, old tragedies, more pining than you can shake a stick at, grand acts of love.

is it good?
it's very, very good. it's the first propercnovel i read (aside from the hilarious one about a guy traveling back in his own timeline and becoming a sugar baby to a mafia boss, which was in a very different league), so i don't know which things are baseline and which things are unique, but it had a very solid foundation: ambitious multilevel, multi-timeline plot coming together in the end both events- and emotions-wise, beautifully iddy main relationship, maybe multifaceted characters who change and grow and clash together in fun ways, a clear and heartfelt understanding of its own core themes.

it's also, unexpectedly, very funny, in this visual, slapsticky, begs-to-be-adapted way - i found myself laughing out loud over it a lot of times, and it possesses this gift of swerve between understated but earnest emotions and all-out jokes that i associate with… a bit of prattchett and a bit of gintama, honestly. take it as you will.

(oh my god the mecha. i will laugh over this one until i die.)

it also made me cry several times; granted, it's not like it's this time, but those were very heartfelt tears.

and the main duo?
first let me say that xie lian was lifted out, wholesale, out of my deepest character preferences. he fell really, really far, and did some bad things, and some very horrible things were done to him, and by the time we meet him he went through everything and achieved this effortless kind of traumatized, humble, accepting, wryly self-deprecating, utterly competent chill that makes a character incredibly appealing to me. he's kind, and he's sweet, and he's gotten any possible embarrassment at least a couple of centuries ago, and he kinda made peace with himself and kinda didn't. i love him and i would raze some cities for his sake.

thankfully for me, hua cheng, the ghost king, loves him a whole damn lot, a ridiculous amount, an epic, over-the-lifetimes, life-shattering amount, and he's a terrifying presence to everybody else and a shy, protective, sweet dork to xie lian, and every time they're together on page my entire heart is just. it's AMAZING. he's a great combination of playing the obsessive protective yandere stalker-lover trope straight and putting it on its head, by making hua cheng not just revere but respect xie lian, in all his good and bad decisions.

they are just so - good for each other, holy shit. they get each other so well. they're the best ever power team. i love them.

(the rest of canon is various characters reenacting "really? in front of my salad?" meme at them. it's hysterical, and it's the best. everybody teams up to tell xie lian that his boyfriend is Problematic way, way before xie lian clues into the fact that he does have a boyfriend, and he's having none of it. i love it.)

and the themes?
okay, so. roughly half of this novel is ridiculous iddy pining, and a fourth of it is various tropes (off the top of my head: soulbond, sex pollen, body switch, de-age, various shades of identity porn… crossdressing…) played very shamelessly. but it also really benefits from having an overarching set of ethical questions, and while it deals with them a bit shounen-style, it still deals with them, and it makes the whole text fresh, and sweet, and bold.

is it possible to save everybody? should you try to save everybody? if you lack the powers to back your convictions, does it make you complicit? when is it possible to stop the cycle of suffering, what can you do if you want to but can't? if you tried and people you failed turned on you, whose fault it is, where does the blame stop?

VME continues to be my delight and joy; I'm reusing my previous requests because they already netted me some great fics and I want more. So; VME being sparkly, completely ridiculous, somehow deadly serious despite being completely ridiculous, and full of gorgeous, warm, feelings-filled devotion between Roberto and Hiraga, and I loved each of its weird and wonderful story beats. I absolutely adore this book, a story of a previously powerless, painfully self-conscious, horribly isolated person doing his utmost and careful best to do what he has to do. Maia's, at his core, first and foremost kind, and he brings this kindness with him as a banner and as a shield, into a situation over which he has little control and in which he has initially no allies, and sets out to reclaim his empire, one person at a time.

Those books are my perennial favorites; I adore the kind hilarity of them, and the intensity of the relationship (whether it's taken as friendship or romance). Psmith is one of my most favorite characters of all time. I love his surety and his unflappability, his low key but endless loyalty and protectiveness, the way he manages to warp the world around himself but does it with benevolence, the way the narrative pokes fun at him but allows him to stand unhumiliated. And I love that Mike is his foil but never the butt of the narrative joke, that Mike's intrinsic value is never questioned or doubted, by the text or by each other. Dear author, welcome! I'm unbelievably excited about this challenge, and I can't wait to see the fic that it brings. I've done my best to prune down the freeform multitude, but I'm 100% sure that there were tags that I have missed, so if there's something in tagset or outside of it that fits my requests or that you particularly like - go for it! Bring all the tropes to my yard, please.

I'll try to give my general likes and some fandom-specific preferences, but feel free to mix and match, or ODAO if nothing in particular strikes your fancy; as long as it doesn't hit my DNWs, I'm good! General hurt/comfort preferences:

I like my hurt hardcore and physical, and my comfort at least somehow proportional and ending on at least a hopeful note, and I like it in context of any given relationship (i.e. the character getting hurt in sight of / for the sake of / in relation to other characters, and them reacting / rescuing / comforting / rehabilitating them, et cetera). I love reading about the aftermaths of disasters as much as I love reading about disasters itself - the recovery, the backsliding, the acceptance, the assistance. Permanent injuries and consequences yes! Adjusting to the new circumstances yes! New understanding yes! And I especially love all those things in the context of larger-than-life, codependent loyalty (formalized or not), self-sacrifice and self-negation.

In particular, the physical kinks especially dear to my heart: torture, dungeons or cages, and rescue thereof, starvation, exhaustion, hand injuries, whipping, crucifixion, all variations on accepting injuries for somebody's sake. For the emotional hurt/comfort, all variations on pining (and/or mutual pining!) and characters (mistakenly) thinking that they're either unloved or undeserving of being loved or protected, and being shown they're wrong.

I prefer my woobies competent, BAMF-y and fighting every step of the way, or going into the self-sacrifice determinedly and with their eyes open (as probably evident in my character selection; never let it be said that I don't have a type.)

I really love non-mundane AUs (high fantasy, pirates, space opera, et cetera), so go there without hesitation if it's your thing.

- Hurt/comfort in all its forms is always a sure bet. All the hurt/comfort, you can't do wrong (or be too hardcore) with it. Physical h/c, emotional h/c, captivity scenarios, caretaking, whipping, dungeons, bullet wounds, wilderness survival, whatever. I love hurt/comfort mostly within the context of a relationship (not necessarily romantic - filial ties, friendship, brothers-in-arms comradeship, whichever fits), as an opening for one character to be hurt and for the other to be outraged/terrified/comforting on their behalf. The only thing I'm particular about is who in a particular gets whumped.

This book was a bit of unexpected delight I've caught in 2018, and so much fun, on so many different levels - from it's Chronicles of Amber-reminiscent setting to the narrative voice to relationships within. I am especially invested into the idea of the Companion bond, and whatever it entails, and the way Rune and Brand sort this particular thing between themselves: where Brand is Rune's companion, and a bodyguard, and a partner, and a best friend, and a nagging caretaker, and a first and last line of defense, and a deeply treasured loved one, and everything in-between, and the most important relationship there could be.

I adore those two and their deep, unshakable, staggeringly important love for each other. This entire show was an unexpected gift to some deep and unplumbed depths of my id - the loyalty, the longing, the identity porn, the mutual protectiveness, the mutual adoration, people getting tied to the pillars and whipped left and right, self-sacrifice, grand gestures and domestic comforts. I love the mix of ridiculous hijinks and darker themes and full-on grand drama intensity. I love Shen Wei's unapologetic intensity and his rather horrible attempts at subterfuge, I love Zhao Yunlan's frank adoration and ferocious protectiveness, I love their ridiculous team and overall found family vibes, and I just want all the stories. All of them.

Ignis/Noct/Luna is the tiny treasured OT3 of my heart, and I'm leaping on the chance to request it! I love Ignis and Noct and the intensity of their relationship in all permutations, and I love the potential what-may-have-been in Noct and Luna, and I think those three together would be really - interesting, and grander than each pairing separately. I basically like the idea of Ignis being included in their relationship by the nature of being, well, Ignis, and also Ignis transferring part of his loyalty/fealty to Luna, first for Noct's sake and then for her own, and how they navigate those waters.

Those books are my perennial favorites; I adore the kind hilarity of them, and the intensity of the relationship (whether it's taken as friendship or romance). Psmith is one of my most favorite characters of all time. I love his surety and his unflappability, his low key but endless loyalty and protectiveness, the way he manages to warp the world around himself but does it with benevolence, the way the narrative pokes fun at him but allows him to stand unhumiliated. And I love that Mike is his foil but never the butt of the narrative joke, that Mike's intrinsic value is never questioned or doubted, by the text or by each other. Awwww, aww, aww. Wang Zheng and Sang Zan, miraculously rescued from Ye Zun (yesss please), decide that afterlife is too short to wait on anything, and demand a wedding - a wedding that the SID team immediately throw themselves into planning and that, of course, does not go according to any sort of plan. There are shenanigans, trouble, dubious research, hilarious incidents, and a beautifully moving, unexpected denouement concerning Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei. Somewhere in this nicely liminal zone between laughter and 'awwww,' which suits the show very well.

Guardian is my newest obsession, and I adore those two and their deep, unshakable, staggeringly important love for each other. This entire show was an unexpected gift to some deep and unplumbed depths of my id - the loyalty, the longing, the identity porn, the mutual protectiveness, the mutual adoration, people getting tied to the pillars and whipped left and right, self-sacrifice, grand gestures and domestic comforts. VME continues to be my delight and joy; I'm reusing my previous requests because they already netted me some great fics and I want more. So; VME being sparkly, completely ridiculous, somehow deadly serious despite being completely ridiculous, and full of gorgeous, warm, feelings-filled devotion between Roberto and Hiraga, and I loved each of its weird and wonderful story beats. It's also hella whiplashy in tone, and I guess my prompts will reflect that.
